The Penguin Student Design Award 2021 is the Live Project I decided to focus on during these four weeks.
The first week was a rocky one, so I decided to merge it with the second week’s work.
In these two weeks I had to choose a book from this list:
Adult Fiction Cover Award: Life Isn’t All Ha Ha Hee Hee by Meera Syal.
Adult Non-Fiction Cover Award: The Uninhabitable Earth by David Wallace Wells.
Children’s Cover Award: Talking Turkeys by Benjamin Zepheniah
I choose to create the book cover for Life Isn’t All Ha HA Hee Hee by Meera Syal, I came to that conclusion because I am not that good at creating things which are non-fictional, and poems are not my forte.
I have been studying the submission standards so I will be on point once I start creating.
I started reading the book via a site that gives you a preview of the book and begun to underline all the words that stand up to me, most were about snow at this stage.
I looked up all the previews book covers to have a clear idea of what I was getting myself into.
The Workshop:
The second week I did a workshop that explored typography, the following are the notes I took:
This helped me a lot to understand better what I am supposed to do and gave me the tools to do a better job in creating Book Covers.
Thoughts and what to do next:
I clearly need to commit a lot more to this book, I need to find a way to properly read it, to understand it and to move forward quickly. For next week I need to look into how I can get the book, research the culture more, take more notes of the words that strike me more and start creating something.
