How does Colour enhance Story telling in animation in Pixar/Disney movies in the 2000’s era (Working question for the dissertation)
Exploring colours’ psychology and animatic experiences. A short animatic to visualize the concepts which might be used as references for future colour enthusiastic.
Animation/animatics is not a strength but the passion behind colour and understanding how they work is, I believe I do not have the required skills to animate fully so I would like to focus more on animatic.
This would be represented in video format, probably an experimental piece on Vimeo or YouTube.
The project has a lot of secondary research, from online research library and linked to the findings from the dissertation. Primary research would be based onto sketches or notes from these sources.
The major equipment used would be Photoshop’s timeline feature.
So far, I am following the brief above.
This week, thanks to a helpful notion given to me by my tutor, I have been looking into Disney and Pixar Movies, for now I have been only able to watch Atlantis Milo’s Return by Walt Disney Home Entertainment, this is because I underestimated on how much time would take to screenshot every scene with a new colour combination and catalogue them with colours picked out, time stamp of when the screenshot was taken and the notes I took while viewing. Mistakes were made too, as I forgot to screenshot it or take note of the time stamps. Here is the list:
And here are the screenshots:
I chose this particular movie because it is a DVD direct sequel of one of my favourite Disney movies, which unfortunately I do not own, and creates a variety of different techniques used to create movies to analyse.
While doing this exercise I noticed that brilliant colours are mostly used when something supernatural is happening or when the characters are in Atlantis, otherwise the tone of the movie is quite flat, and mostly on the focused on the tone spectrum of colour. I believe this YouTuber Blender Guru explained it in his video: ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qj1FK8n7WgY ) that brilliant colouring is usually used to make things appear more fantastical and detach from reality.
