To be honest the two weeks are similar, so I decided to post them together.
My idea revolved around my family experience with migration as we are from Italy and moved here nearly 7 years ago. So, I decided to interview my mum on how everything was done and how she felt here. This was done in my native language so during the two weeks I had to translate and edit down what’s been said and write it down. It was hard but at least I got better at translating.
While I was translating, I thought on how should adapt the ‘script’ of the interview and an idea came to me: if I create some sort of ‘mascot’ to represent us and so I begun to create quick sketches.
I chose to try (and in a way I failed as some of the drawings were done on paper) to do a fully digital creation as I usually use a lot of paper / sketchbook, plus I am more comfortable with paper and ink but I wanted to experiment with photoshop. As I begun working I asked my sister and mum (my sister even if she wasn’t exactly planned to be in the same interview) she made my work less chunky and text heavy and more like a conversation, and it is the reason why I chose to make a comic book out of it in the first place, but I digress. I asked them which creature they wanted to be, so my mum chose a dragon, as I couldn’t do a niffler, for obvious reason, my sister choose a toy she had growing up with some differences and for myself I wasn’t sure, I first wanted to be a barn owl with a fringe, that’s because I at the moment have a kind of ‘emo’ style of haircut who have a bright green fringe, since I have been wearing these types of fringe for ages as I love it so much, but off the tangent I go again. I wasn’t satisfied by it so I changed it up with a cloaked figure without eyes but a toothy grin… I don’t even know why I went with this design, I guess I just liked it and rolled with it.
